In the beginning
Established in Oslo in 1907 by Ferdinand Münz, Aktieselskabet Motoren RAP was the first company to hold the `Rapp’ name. The company was formed around a two-stroke hot-bulb engine and set its sights at an early stage on export markets, selling RAP engines to England, Portugal, Spain, USA and South Africa. In 1959, the company moved from Oslo, changed its name to AS Motoren Rapp, and began production in Bodø, in northern Norway. Rapp was constantly looking for ways to expand, improve technology and develop new products. This led to the acquisition of a fellow Bodø company and the formation of Rapp Bomek in 1983, followed by the establishment of the Rapp Marine Group, as a holding company for all Rapp companies, in 1987. Rapp Bomek AS Over the 30 years that followed, Rapp Bomek became one of the leading companies in the global development, production and service of fire-proof and other high-end doors for the offshore market. In many contexts, the Rapp Bomek name serves as a quality standard when specifying products suitable for on and offshore installations. In the beginning, the company’s product range was limited. In order to meet increased demand, new specifications and higher industry standards, new products were developed in close cooperation with customers. Rapp Bomek quickly saw a clear competitive advantage lay in identifying customers’ needs and developing creative solutions that were functional and satisfied stringent safety standards. In many cases, setting the standards. Rapp Bomek fire doors, for example, helped raise the standards of safety onboard ships and oil and gas installations around the globe. In 1983, when doors were very heavy and robust, the product name “Heavy Duty doors” became a reality. By 1988, platform structures had evolved from large fixed steel or concrete platforms to floating production rigs and the market had begun looking for lighter doors. The result was the development of a “Medium Duty” fire door, which was a great success. Rapp Pyrotec In 1996, in order to offer the entire specter of A and H-class doors, the Rapp Marine Group acquired Pyrotec AS, a leading supplier of high quality doors to the civil building industry, and renamed the company Rapp Pyrotec AS. The acquisition enabled Rapp Bomek to produce and deliver lightweight interior doors (Light Duty) for living quarters and thereby offer customers the full range of fire doors. The NORSOK standard has been developed largely as a result of the Rapp Bomek concept.
